To be a better listener

Put yourself in the same emotional state as the person you’re listening to.

So if they’re telling you about a time they were embarrassed, you might not be able to feel exactly what they’re feeling, but you can remember a situation 3 weeks ago or 4 months ago, or 3 years ago that you were embarrassed too and since it’s your own experience you have such a vivid connection to it, allowing you to empathize with the person that much more.

Whatever emotion they’re feeling, you can help them a lot more if you remember an experience where you felt that emotion too.
